　　本片按照诺贝尔文学奖得主马丁·尼索的作品改编，描写19世纪末，瑞典老农拉斯卡森带着他唯一的小儿子佩尔移民丹麦，追求他们心中的理想王国。惋惜他们唯一可以找到的工作，是在石头农庄当马廊工人，早晨还只能睡在茅草堆上与马匹为伍，受尽侮辱的父子见证了庄园里各种的黑暗和罪行。庄园里的长工埃里克带领工人们起来抵挡管家的虐政，后因一次变乱致使聪慧残废，佩尔为其勇敢精神所鼓舞，决议分开庄园，继续埃里克要征服天下的愿望。
　　原著是丹麦家喻户晓的名著，本片作了一定水平的点窜，去除原作中的伤感成份和嘲讽精神，使之过于正规中庸，欠缺升降转折的条理感；不外导演透太小佩尔的眼睛和长大履历，向观众展现了以农庄为代表的封建社会统治阶级的残暴和以长工为代表的劳动听民的醒觉。除了其内容丰富之外，摄影师所塑造的雄壮优美的影象功不成没。演员外型与演技均传神自然，小佩尔特别出色。本片曾获戛纳最好影片奖、奥斯卡最好外语片奖、及欧洲电影奖的最好影片。
