　　大卫艾许是剑桥耶稣学院的灵学教授，深信人类死后并无安息之地。一天，他接到艾德布鲁克之家韦伯蜜斯的来信，请他前往观察该宅邸发生的怪事。
　　艾德布鲁克之家住了三兄妹，冷酷孤僻的劳勃，生机勃勃的赛门，和自力、大胆、美丽的克莉丝汀娜。在观察时代，大卫发现艾德布鲁克之家自己似乎有怪异处，他经常为莫名的意外所伤，另一方面，克莉丝汀娜的美深深吸引了他，扰动他的豪情，他没法顺从的成了她的情人。
　　观察的情形毫无冲破，大卫自己反而逐步陷出神惑。他经常看到闪现的鬼影，而他毫无出处的感应：那就是他幼时溺水而死的双胞胎妹妹茱莉叶。
