　　因发电厂筑坝施工，卡胡瓦西河将要变成湖区而消失，路易斯（伯特·雷诺兹 Burt Reynolds 饰）、艾德（强·沃特 Jon Voight 饰）、波比（尼德·巴蒂 Ned Beatty 饰）和德鲁（罗尼·考克斯 Ronny Cox 饰）四个爱好冒险和自然的好友结伴，计划在周末前往卡胡瓦西河飘流。四人在行将成为湖区的冷落小镇找到领导，终究到达河岸，简单预备后就起头了冒险。第二天早上，试图狩猎的艾德一无所获，在强健灵敏的路易斯眼前颇感无趣，与胖子波比先行下河探路，但是他们遇上了两个持枪的陌生人，对方将他们控制并施以欺侮，路易斯赶到后将陌生人杀死。四人仓促逃离此地，此时，河水变得狰狞，急流与岩石处处致命，一场冒险之旅成为了夺命之旅……
