◎幕后揭秘
　　1974年，乔治·A·罗梅罗应邀参观了门罗维尔购物中心，除了领略到购物天堂的红火景象之外，罗梅罗还有幸一睹商场中的隐蔽区域，一位友人开玩笑说如果有前所未有的突发事件，肯定有人能在购物中心幸存下来，罗梅罗深受启发，很快开始着手本片剧本。虽然罗梅罗和制作人理查德·P·鲁宾斯坦无法在美国国内找到新片投资方，可意大利恐怖片导演达里欧·阿基多无意间得知了本片的拍摄计划，作为《活死人之夜》的影迷和拥护者，阿基多迫切希望帮助筹拍这部经典恐怖片的续集，他与罗梅罗和鲁宾斯坦会面商谈，提出用影片的拍摄经费换取国际发行权。为了让罗梅罗在创作剧本期间改换心境，阿基多邀请罗梅罗前往罗马，两人还在一起共同谋划故事情节。在罗梅罗的争取下，影片得以在门罗维尔购物中心实地拍摄，并得到了公司老板的资助。
　　本片于1977年11月13日在门罗维尔购物中心开拍，由于当时正值圣诞节前夕的购物旺季，所以影片拍摄只能在晚11点至翌日早7点之间进行。进入12月，剧组决定不再摘掉商场中的圣诞饰品，因为每次都需要耗费大量时间。为避免受到严重干扰，影片拍摄不得不暂停三周。在此期间，罗梅罗剪辑了已完成的胶片。
　　任本片特效化妆师的汤姆·萨维尼曾效力于《活死人之夜》，作为小有名气的恐怖片化妆师，萨维尼在影片拍摄期间每周都要为近300位临时演员上妆，萨维尼有8名助手，其中的约瑟夫·佩拉图在片中扮演了一位警官，并进而在僵尸三部曲的第三部《丧尸出笼》中领衔出演大反派。
